Bearsville Studio House

AThe brief

A painter who had worked for twenty years in a converted garage with one north window wanted a real studio, and her partner wanted a house that did not smell like linseed oil. The site is a two-acre clearing in second-growth forest with one usable flat area, so the two buildings had to share it. Every combined scheme we were shown by previous consultants treated the studio as a wing of the house. That is the failure mode: the studio becomes a room you tidy before guests arrive, and it stops being a place you can leave a mess in for three weeks.

BWhat we did

One building, one roof, one party wall, two front doors on opposite elevations. You cannot get from the house to the studio without going outside — thirty feet of covered walk in the weather, which is exactly the amount of transition a working day needs. The studio's north wall is a twenty-two-foot clerestory that never sees the sun directly; the house faces south-west into the clearing and gets everything the studio refuses. Same structure, same cladding, same budget line — and completely opposite light. The party wall is 12-inch CMU for acoustic separation and for the six tons of thermal mass that keeps the studio stable overnight in February.

   Thirty feet of weather

   No internal connection. The client was nervous about this for a month and now describes the walk as the reason she starts work at eight rather than eleven.

   One roof, two lights

   A single ridge over both volumes, but the studio takes only north clerestory and the house takes only south-west. The building is one object with two opposite interior climates.

   The wall is the battery

   Twelve-inch CMU on the party line: acoustic separation the painter asked for, and thermal mass nobody asked for that holds the studio within four degrees overnight.
